To my fellow challengers

TODAY WAS ONE OF THE BEST DAYS EVER! I AM SO EXCITED TO CONTINUE MY JOURNEY AND I THINK EVERYONE THAT FINISHED THE CHALLENGE DESERVED THE TRIP. YOU ALL INSPIRE ME SO I WANTED TO TELL EACH OF YOU HOW YOU INSPIRE ME.

JENNI- I THINK YOU HAVE A GREAT VOICE AND A REALLY AMAZING PERSONALITY. THANKS FOR HELPING ALL OF US WITH THE RECITAL! I REALLY ADMIRE HOW YOU BELT AND PUT EVERYTHING INTO A PERFORMANCE. THE FIRST TIME I SAW YOU SING WAS WHEN WE HAD OUR STUDIO CLASS AND YOU SANG "GOOD MORNING BALTIMORE" YOUR PERFORMANCE BLEW ME AWAY AND REALLY INSPIRED ME TO WORK ON MY ACTING.

KRISTEN: YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE CHALLENGE TO KEEP GOING. I AM SUPER BUSY BUT SEEING HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO GET EVERYTHING DONE WITH YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE PUSHED ME TO WORK HARDER. ALSO THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING ME IN ALL THE GROUP STUFF.

CIERRA: YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SO NICE TO ME AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL PERSON INSIDE AND OUT AND YOU INSPIRE ME TO GET MY BUTT TO YOGA SO I CAN, SOME DAY, BE IN FANTASTIC SHAPE LIKE YOU ARE. YOU HAVE ALSO COME SUCH A LONG WAY WITH YOUR SINGING, IT SOUNDED GREAT AT THE RECITAL!

FERNANDO: YOU SERIOUSLY HAVE ONE OF MY FAVORITE MALE VOICES. I LOVE HEARING YOU SING. YOU HAVE SUCH GREAT POWER AND WONDERFUL QUALITY! YOU DEFN HAVE THE CHOPS, SO KEEP WORKIN AND YOU WILL GO FAR.

AMANDA: I DONT KNOW YOU AS WELL AS SOME OF THE OTHER CHALLENGERS BUT I HAVE SEEN YOU SING A FEW TIMES AND I SOOO ADMIRE HOW BEAUTIFUL AND NATURAL YOUR VOICE IS, YOU HAVE THE VOICE I ASPIRE TO HAVE SOMEDAY.

GILBERT: I HAVE ONLY MET YOU TWICE BUT I REMEMBER I LOVED WATCHING YOU SING AT THE SENIOR CENTER, YOU BRING A GREAT ENERGY TO THE ROOM. I ALSO APPRECIATE HOW YOU HAVE BEEN SO NICE TO ME, BEING THE NEWBY IN A GROUP THAT SEEMS TO ALL KNOW EACH OTHER, SO THANK YOU AND I HOPE TO GET TO KNOW YOU BETTER.

GRACE: YOU ARE ONE OF THE SWEETEST PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET!!! I MET YOU IN KATHY'S CLASS AT UNM AND I HAVE WATCHED YOUR SINGING PROGRESS SOO MUCH. WHAT I ADMIRE MOST ABOUT YOU IS YOUR ABILITY TO BALANCE A JOB, SCHOOL, A FAMILY, VOCAL WORK, AND DO IT ALL WITH A SMILE. YOUR POSITIVE ENERGY IS GREAT TO BE AROUND.

JESSICA: I DONT KNOW YOU VERY WELL BUT I THINK YOUR VOICE IS WONDERFUL, YOU HAVE SUCH GREAT TECHNIQUE BUT YOU MAKE IT SOUND EFFORTLESS.

JONATHAN: I AM SO GLAD I GOT A CHANCE TO MEET YOU. I SAW YOUR BLOG AND GOT EXCITED TO MEET A FELLOW DANCER IN THE CHALLENGE. YOU DID SUCH A GREAT JOB OF ORGANIZING THE RECITAL. YOU HAVE SUCH A GREAT VOICE, I WAS AMAZED AT THE SENIOR CENTER! I ALSO REALLY APPRECIATE, LIKE I SAID WITH THE OTHERS, HOW YOU HAVE BEEN SO NICE TO ME, THAT DOESNT ALWAYS HAPPEN WITH PERFORMERS, SO ITS A BIG DEAL TO ME. THANKS, HOPE TO WORK WITH YOU IN THE FUTURE.

RYAN: AS I TOLD YOU, THAT SONG YOU SING ABOUT SAILING(SORRY DONT REMEMBER THE NAME) IS SO GREAT AND I LOVE THE WAY YOU SING IT, BUT MY FONDEST MEMORY OF YOU IS WHEN WE WERE BOTH IN THE TALENT SHOW AT UNM AND YOU KICKED SOM MAJOR AS DANCING TO LADY GAGA!!! I LOVED IT AND YOUR PERFORMACE AND SHOWMANSHIP REALLY INSPIRED ME!!

AND KURT,

I CANT EVEN BEGIN TO THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE FOR ALL OF US. THIS EXPERIENCE HAS TAKEN ME SO FAR OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, IN A GOOD WAY, AND I WILL WORK AS HARD AS I CAN TO BE PREPARED FOR NEW YORK.

CHALLENGERS: I LOVE ALL YOU GUYS AND YOU ARE ALL AMAZING AND DESERVING SO I WILL DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO LIVE UP TO NOT ONLY KURTS EXPECTATIONS, BUT MY OWN AND ALL OF YOURS!

THANK YOU ALL,

ERIN ALLEN

DAY # 30 THE FINAL DAY OF THE CHALLENGE!!!

WOW!!!I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS THE FINAL DAY OF THE CHALLENGE!!! THIS HAS BEEN SUCH AN EYE-OPENNING EXPERIENCE FOR ME. NOT ONLY HAS THE CHALLENGE PUSHED ME VOCALLY, BUT IT HAS ALSO PUSHED ME PAST WHAT I THOUGHT I COULD DO. WHEN KURT FIRST PRESENTED THE CHALLENGE TO US, I THOUGHT THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO ALL OF THAT WHILE GOING TO SCHOOL, WORKING, DANCE COMPANY COMMITMENTS, AND BEING AT REHEARSAL FOR OKLAHOMA EVERY NIGHT TILL 10. I HAD TO REALLY ORGANIZE AND SOMETIMES DO MY VOCALLIZING AT 5AM JUST TO MAKE SURE I GOT IT DONE. I DIDNT BELIEVE IN MYSELF ENOUGH TO THINK I COULD DO IT, BUT IM SOOO GLAD I DID. I THOUGHT THE 5 charitable DEEDS WERE GOING TO BE REALLY HARD TO DO, BUT THOSE ENDED UP BEING SOME OF THE MOST REWARDING WORK OUT OF ALL, TURNS OUT IT REALLY DOES MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD TO DO GOOD THINGS FOR OTHER PEOPLE.THIS WHOLE CHALLENGE WAS MEANT TO SHOW US THAT WHEN WE MOVE TO NEW YORK TO PURSUE OUR DREAMS, THIS IS WHAT OUR LIFE IS GOING TO BE LIKE TIMES 10!!! IT WAS GREAT FOR ME TO REALIZE THAT AND I LOVE BEING IN THE HABBIT OF REALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO MY VOICE EVERYDAY.
I HAVE TO GIVE MAJOR THANKS TO MY SUPPORTERS WHO HAVE BEEN WITH ME EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. THANK YOU DEVI, JACEY, JASON, JONO, KEITH, AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO FOLLOWED MY BLOG, I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!!! AND THANK YOU MOST OF ALL TO MY MOM WHO HAS BEEN MY BIGGEST SUPPORTER MY ENTIRE LIFE, AND IN THE CHALLENGE. AND FINALLY, THANK YOU TO KURT ROBINSON WHO PUT THIS WHOLE THING TOGETHER. KURT DOESNT NEED TO TAKE SUCH AN INTEREST IN ALL OF US FROM ALBUQUERQUE, BUT YET HE COMES EVERY MONTH AND REALLY HELPS US, AND REALLY CARES ABOUT US. THIS IS NOT THE END, IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF MY NEW LIFESTYLE DEVOTED TO REALLY MAKING ALL THIS HAPPEN!!!

OK SO ALL I HAVE LEFT IS MY FINAL PRACTICE LOG SO HERE IT IS,

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: lip trills, sirens, I did my sirens up to the highest note I could possibly hit, and then tried to hold that note for 12 beats. I did the same for the lowest note in my range. I worked on finding my pitch within given chords ( quite hard).

MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: " Prima Donna" from phantom of the opera. "Keep holding on" avril lavigne. " what I did for love" from a chorus line.

MINUTES: 35

SUCCESS: I havent workad as much on my classical stuff this month because I have been trying to work on my modern sound, but i think my work on my modern sound has actually helped me with my classical sound. "Prima donna" sounded more powerfull than it has in the past. " What I did for love" sound so much stronger than it did when I first did it for the last studio session we had.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: "Keep holding on" still needs alot of work. I need to figure out how to speak the low notes and not let them go soft.

NOTES: All this practice has paid off a great deal and I will keep practicing every day.

THANK YOU ALL SOOO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOU HELP AND SUPPORT!!! WOO HOO WE DID IT!!!

Saturday, January 29, 2011

DAY # 29- THE END......ALMOST

WOW I CANT BELIEVE THE CHALLENGE IS ALMOST OVER, BUT ITS NOT REALLY......IT HAS REALLY ONLY JUST BEGUN!!! I HAVE BECOME SO MUCH MORE SERIOUS ABOUT WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE, THROUGH THIS CHALLENGE, THAT I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO KEEP THIS NEW LIFESTYLE UP. I HAVE CHANGED SOO MUCH DURING THIS CHALLENGE, NOT ONLY WITH MY SINGING BUT ORGANIZATION AND PLANNING SKILLS ASWELL. I ALSO HAD TO LEARN HOW TO GET CONNECTED, 2 WEEKS BEFORE THE CHALLENGE STARTED I DIDNT HAVE A FACEBOOK. I MADE A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT FOR THE CHALLENGE AND HAD TO LEARN HOW TO USE IT REALLY QUICKLY, AND I HAD TO LEARN HOW TO USE MY DIGITAL CAMERA AND UPLOAD PICS. ITS BEEN A CRAZY MONTH BUT I HAVE LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!!

I JUST HAVE SOME DAILY SINGING LEFT TO POST SO HERE IT IS

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: I worked on creating alot of space in my mouth, the way I do when im singing in the classical style, but with a straight tone so that I could really support the modern sound the way I do with the classical. I also did this breathing/scale exercise that basically goes through scales really fast and rally jumps around so its hard to keep up with it, and keep the breath. I also did sirens and lip trills.

MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: "My Heart will go on", from celine dion, "Out here on my own" from fame, and "Behind these hazel eyes" from Kelly clarkson.

MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: Behind these Hazel eyes" felt really good today. It felt really supported. I was able to really feel the transition from mid to head voice that Kurt talks about, and it felt easy. "Out here on my own" is becoming pretty solid, I may need to but it in my audition book.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: Now that im able to feel how to make that more modern sound and support it, I need to make it actually sound good, right now it just sounds really nasty.

NOTES: All the daily practice has helped me sooo much, im defn. going to keep it up!!!

HEALTHY MEAL # 33

CEASAR SALAD W/ CHICKEN AND SPINACH ARTICHOKE PIZZA ON THIN WHOLE WHEAT CRUST.

OKAY I JUST HAVE ONE DAY LEFT, JUST SOME DAILY PRACTICE TOMORROW AND TATS IT! SEE YOU THEN!!!

Friday, January 28, 2011

DAY # 28

WOW I CANT BELIEVE THE CHALLENGE IS ALMOST OVER !!! I HAVE GOTTEN USED TO IT!

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: I worked on my chest voice by simply singing one note at a time and holding for 16 beats and then trying to hold it for 20 beats. I also did regular sirens, and sirens with the baby cry sound. I also worked on cresendo and decresendo in the same breath, on the same note. I worked on finding the correct pitch of the given chord.

MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: " I can hear the bells" from hairspray , " Out here on my own" from fame, and "so much better" from legally blonde.

MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: I am starting to develop sound that I am comfortable with when Im singing in the style im not used to. It is not a very pretty sound but my support is getting much better when I belt.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I need more work on my breath support like I did for warm-ups, because im not able to hold long notes all the way through in the middle of a song.

NOTES: "so much better" is still one of my favorite songs but that is defn. the one I need help with in terms of breath support.

COMING CLOSE TO THE END, BUT ITS NOT OVER YET!

Thursday, January 27, 2011

DAY # 27

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAl concepts: sirens, straight tone scales, I worked on alot of exercises I do with Kurt like gugugu, and crying scales.
MINUTES:15

REPERTOIRE: "Keep Holding on" Avril lavigne and "Gravity" from wicked, and "Dont stop believin" journey-I was working with my glee book with the sing along cd.
MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: I really used the crying technique on "Keep holdin on" and that seemed to really work with the song, I was able to get loud, even on my lower notes.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I realized when I was looking at my glee music book and trying to sing along to the cd that I was getting easily lost. I really need to make it a priority to learn how to sight read. Its too important for me to ignore if I want to audition for real jobs in New York.

NOTES: artists like avril are really good for me to practice with because they have that crying edge sound that im trying to develope.

DAY # 26

TODAY WAS ANOTHER CRAZY DAY AT SCHOOL BUT IM STARTING TO GET USED TO THIS INSANE SCHEDULE

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: SCALES, I WORKED ALOT ON THE TOP OF MY RANGE BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN NEGLECTING MY HIGH NOTES, I WORKED ON RELAXING MY THROAT( THE GRUDGE SOUND), AND I ALSO WORKED ON WHINNING MY SIRENS TO WAKE UP THE NASIL AREA.

MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: I worked on "Good morning Baltimore" from Hairspray and, inspired by seeing wicked stuff all over popejoy, "Defying Gravity"from wicked.

MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: Both of these songs are belty, but since I have been working alot on my belt, and supporting it correctly, they didnt hurt my throat like they normally would.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I have to work on the style of both these songs. I have to put more personality into them, they still sound kind of robotic.

NOTES: Next time I have a coaching session with paul I defn. want to take my new hairspray book.

SO I HAD A HEALTHY BREAKFAST AND LUNCH TODAY

MINUTES: 15

REPERTOIRE: "My Heart will go on" and "Behind these hazel eyes".
MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: I havent worked on "Behind these hazel eyes" since I started the challenge and I noticed that all the vocal work i have been doing has really helped with songs like this.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I have to improve making my low notes louder and more clear.

NOTES: I have noticed that singing Kelly Clarkson music is a good way to work on my edgy sound.

HEALTHY MEALS # 29

RATING: mostly healthy, aside from the cheese.

LIVE PERFORMANCE/NEW SONG LEARNED

THIS PAST SUNDAY WE HAD OUR FULL VOICE CHALLENGE RECITAL. EVERYONE DID REALLY GREAT. I FELT LIKE THE SHOW REALLY CAME TOGETHER BECAUSE IT WAS MUCH MORE ORGANIZED WE HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST. I SANG 2 BRAND NEW SONGS I LEARNED IN THE PAST 30 DAYS, "THE FINER THINGS" FROM JANE EYRE THE MUSICAL, AND "CAINT SAY NO" FROM OKLAHOMA. BOTH SONGS PRESENTED THEIR OWN CHALLENGES. " THE FINER THINGS" WAS REALLY TECHNICALLY DIFFICULT AND IT WAS HARD TO KEEP ALL THE WORDS STRAIGHT. "CAINT SAY NO" WAS HARD FOR ME BECAUSE IT WAS IN THAT BELTEY STYLE THAT I AM NOT USED TO, BUT THAT IS WHY I PICKED THAT SONG, BECAUSE I WANTED TO WORK ON MY WEAKNESSES. ALL THE PERFORMERS SANG 2 SONGS AND DID A GREAT JOB. WE HAD OUR AWESOME SUPPORTERS COME TO WATCH AND THE WONDERFUL ZACK TO PLAY FOR US, IT TOOK ALOT OF PLANNING TO GET REHEARSALS IN WITH HIM, BUT THATS WHY IT CAME OUT MUCH BETTER THAN THE SENIOR CENTER.

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE VIDEO OF THE FINER THINGS ON YOUTUBE

I WILL GIVE MORE OF MY DAY # 25 LATER

Monday, January 24, 2011

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: chest voice, humming, throat openning exercises, straight tone scales.

MINUTES: 15

REPERTOIRE: " what a catch" fall out boy, and " My heart will go on".

MINUTES: 35

SUCCESS: I was able to sing in my chest voice and my belt feels really good today.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: now that I am feeling better about my belt, i need to work on making it louder.

NOTES: I like singing to fallout boy because it is a really good range for me and i can put some rock edge on it.

THEN, I WENT TO ROADRUNNER FOOD BANK

GOOD DEED # 5

TODAY I WENT BACK TO ROADRUNNER FOOD BANK. THEY PUT ME IN THE CEREAL SECTION INSTEAD OF THE WAREHOUSE SO THEY HAD ME BAGGING AND SEALING CEREAL FOR THEIR BACKBACK PROGRAM. THE BACKPACK PROGRAM FEEDS THOUSANDS OF KIDS EVERY DAY. WE HAD TO SCOOP CEREAL INTO LITTLE PLASTIC BAGS AND WE HAD TO MAKE SURE THAT EACH BAG WAS 3 OZ. THEN, WE SEALED IT AND LABLED EACH ONE. THE LADY WHO WAS SUPERVISING TOLD US THAT JUST TODAY, THE AMOUNT OF CEREAL BAGGED WAS ENOUGH TO FEED 4,000 KIDS. I FELT REALLY GREAT ABOUT IT. IT WAS NOT AT AL LIKE THE LAST TIME I WENT TO ROADRUNNER BUT IT WAS JUST AS REWARDING.

HERE I AM IN MY WILLY WONKA-ISH LAB COAT

THEN I RUSHED STRAIGHT TO MY VOCAL LESSON

VOCAL LESSON # 4

DATE/TIME: jan 24th, 3pm

INSTRUCTOR: Sandra Neel

MINUTES: 60

REPERTOIRE: "The finer things" and " "many a new day"

POINTS COVERED: We worked alot on timing on "the finer things" I was singing 4th notes that are supposed to be 8th notes. ON "many a new day" , I worked on my 2nd soprano harmony parts.

NOTES: Now that I worked on the timing for "the finer things", It sounds much better.

ME AND SANDY

THATS MY DAY, AND... STILL MORE INFO AND VIDEO OF THE LIVE PERFOMANCE TO COME LATER...STAY TUNED!!

Sunday, January 23, 2011

DAY # 23

I HAD A GREAT DAY TODAY. I GOT UP EARLY TO VOCALIZE BEFORE WORK.

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: sirens, lip trills, crying into scales, straight tone scales. I worked on cresendos and decresendo.

MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: "Never fall in love again" from promises promises and "The Finer things" getting ready for the recital today, and, inspired by the awesome jazz show I saw last night, I began to look at "Masquerade", Karen Carpenter.

MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: The finer things felt really good today, i felt really connected to my support in my belly. "Never fall in love again" felt more set as far as style, I found the kind of style I want to sing it in.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I just started working with the karen carpenter song and there are some parts that are way down in the chest voice, that is why I love her sound, I need to develope that part of my voice so I can sing those parts with clarity.

NOTES: I think working on stuff from the carpenters is really good for me to work my chest voice.

THEN I WENT TO WORK, AND THEN I WENT TO A MASTER CLASS WITH SANDRA NEEL AND PAUL, AND THEN I HEADED STRAIGHT TO THE FULL VOICE RECITAL WHERE I PERFORMED MY 2 BRAND NEW SONGS LEARNED JUST THIS MONTH!

THE RECITAL WAS REALLY AWESOME. WE ALL GOT THERE AROUND 3PM AND STARTED SETTING UP CHAIRS AND GETTING IN SOME LAST MINUTE PRACTICE WITH ZACK. THEN, PEOPLE STARTED COMING IN AND WE STARTED. THE WHOLE THING WAS VERY ORGANIZED AND I OWE THAT TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO GOT IT ORGANIZED. THANK YOU JONATHAN, KRISTEN, ZACK, AND JENNI FOR FILMING IT....I WILL TALK MORE ABOUT THIS WHEN I CAN GET THE VIDEOS POSTED UP, MOST LIKELY TOMORROW SO STAY TUNED FOR THE REST OF THAT STORY. I HAD A REALLY GREAT TIME AND IT WAS A REALLY IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE TO TRY TO GET OVER MY NERVES. STAY TUNED FOR PART 2 OF THIS WHEN I GET THE VIDEO POSTED TO YOUTUBE.

Saturday, January 22, 2011

day # 22

Hey everyone! I had a really great day! Im happy to report that i did not have to do my vocal work @ 5am today, I actually got to sleep in till 7:00 am....SCORE!!! Anyway I had work this morning and I knew I had long day ahead of me so I grabbed an energizing breakfast and quickly ate it in the breakroom.

HEALTHY MEAL # 25

FROM: STARBUCKS

RATING: VERY HEALTHY, AND IT GAVE ME ENERGY FOR MY LONG DAY AHEAD.

I WORKED UNTIL 2:00PM AND THE RUSHED OVER TO THE OKLAHOMA DANCE REHEARSAL THAT STARTED @ 2:30 PM.

DANCE # 7

DATE/TIME: Jan 22, 2:30pm

TYPE OF CLASS: 3 HOUR OKLAHOMA DANCE REHEARSAL

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Quite difficult, Oklahoma is a major dancing show and the choreography is complex, i love it!!

COMPANY: MUSICAL THEATRE SOUTHWEST

CHOREOGRAPHER: EDYE ALLEN

ENJOY: I love learning all the new choreography! Its really fun and challenging I like everyone in the cast, they are really working hard.

CHALLENGING: IT is a little stressful for me because im the dance captian for the show so i am responsible for learning everyones choreography, and its alot on this show but its a good kind of stress so I cant complain.

ME AND EDYE OUTSIDE MTS AFTER

AFTER THAT, I CHANGED AND WENT TO SEE A VOCAL PERFORMANCE THAT WAS AWESOME!!!

LIVE PERFORMANCE

i HAD HEARD ABOUT A JAZZ SINGER WHO WAS GOING TO BE SINGING AT MYKINOS IN THE PAPER SO I WENT TO CHECK IT OUT. IT WAS A TRIO : DIANNA HUGHES SINGING, SID FENDLEY ON PIANO, AND KEN BATTAT ON DRUMS. I LOVED IT!!! THE MUSIC WAS BEAUTIFUL, IT WAS SO RICH AND LOUD. SHE SANG SOME JAZZ STUFF BUT SHE ALSO SANG SOME OF MY FAVORITE SONGS LIKE, MASQUERADE-MADE FAMOUS BY ONE OF MY SINGING IDOLS MISS KAREN CARPENTER, AND SWAY. SHE ALSO DID SOME REALLY GREAT SONGS THAT HAD A GREAT SAMBA BEAT. I REALLY LOVED HER VOICE. SHE WAS SUCH A NATURAL. SHE SANG IN BEAUTIFUL STRAIGHT TONES, WHICH I WORK ON ALOT!!! THEY WERE ALSO REALLY NICE, ONONE OF THEIR BREAKS THEY AGREED TO TAKE A PIC WITH ME. THIS INSPIRED ME BECAUSE OF HOW SHE WAS A GREAT VOCALLIST, BUT MOSTLY BECAUSE OF HOW SHE WAS SO NATURAL AND JUST HAD TOTAL CONFIDENCE, WHICH I WANT TO WORK AT AND GET BETTER.

HERE WE ARE

WHILE LISTENING I HAD SOME REALLY YUMMY GREEK FOOD

HEALTHY MEAL # 26

MUSAKA-AN EGGPLANT AND SQUASH DISH WITH GREEN BEANS ON THE SIDE

RATING - REALLY HEALTHY, FRESH, AND YUMMY!!!

THEN FINALLY I CAME HOME AND GOT SOME VOCAL WORK IN
DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: Chest voice work, yogi bear-gu gu gu, straight tone scales-inspired by that performance.
minutes: 15

REPERTOIRE: "I caint say no" and "The finer things" Im really trying to get these good and ready for tomorrow.

MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: I was finally able to work on really putting alot of character into both of these pieces.

areas to improve: "the finer things" is really technically difficult so just hitting all the right notes is a constantr struggle.

NOTES: IM EXCITED TO SING THESE TOMORROW.

OK THATS IT FOR TODAY, I HOPE I SEE SOME OF YOU TOMORROW!!!

Friday, January 21, 2011

DAY # 21

HEY EVERYONE! IM GETTING MY POST UP EARLY TODAY BECAUSE I HAVE A NIGHT FULL OF OKLAHOMA STUFF SO I WONT BE HOME TILL VERY LATE.

I HAVE BEEN SOO BUSY THAT I HAVE HAD TO DO MY VOCAL WORK AT 5AM BEFORE I LEAVE FOR SCHOOL. I AM ACTUALLY STARTING TO LIKE PRACTICING IN THE MORNING, ITS A GREAT WAY TO START THE DAY!!!

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: I worked on scales, I just went note by note and held each one, in a straight tone, for 16 beats. I worked mostly in the lowest part of my range, but then I did some sirens to wake the top of my range up. I worked on breathing correctly, getting enough air to last, but not any more than I need.

MINUTES: 15

REPERTOIRE: I worked on the two songs I want to do for the show on sunday, "I caint say no" and "The finer things".
MINUTES:40

SUCCESS: I feel much better about some of the difficult parts in "The finer things". It felt connected today and supported. I was also able to find alot of support and get my voice in the exact right place for "I caint say no".

AREAS TO IMPROVE: at certian points in "The Finer things" I can slip and go slightly flat or sharp. In "I caint say no", there is one part in the middle where I have trouble with the tempo.

NOTES: I have noticed that it helps me to work on the music for awhile, and then take a break when I get frustrated, and then go back to it with a fresh mind.

THEN SCHOOL

THEN WHEN I GOT HOME I GRABBED A QUICK BITE

HEALTHY MEAL # 24

Turkey sub on wheat bread with lettuce and pickles and bacon

FROM: SUBWAY

RATING: Mostly healthy, except for the bacon.

THEN I HAD ABOUT AN HOUR SO I WORKED ON BOTH OF THOSE SONGS AGAIN

AND NOW IM BACK OFF TO UNM TO PRACTICE WITH ZACK AND THE OTHER CHALLENGERS FOR SUNDAY!!

THEN OKLAHOMA TONIGHT BUT I MAY POST SOME MORE HEALTHY FOOD LATER IF I GET HOME IN TIME....

Thursday, January 20, 2011

DAY # 20

WOW SO IM NOT EVEN A WEEK INTO SCHOOL AND ITS ALREADY KICKING MY BEHIND!!!
SO I HAD ANOTHER AWESOME 5 AM VOCAL PRACTICE, MY FIRST OF MANY TODAY!

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: Scales, Chest voice, I worked on really getting my voice in what I call "The happy spot", meaning my support is coming from way deep down in the bottom of my belly and my throat doesnt feel any strain at all. I must say warming up takes a bit longer at that time in the morning, but it eventually gets there.

MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: " The Finer things" "out here on my own" and "I caint say no".
MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: "I caint say no" felt really good today. I actually feel really good belting that, i was able to get it into that nasily place. I can finally feel my belt work paying off. yey!

AREAS TO IMPROVE: "The finer things" is super complicated. I love it, but the timing is a real struggle.

NOTES: I have been working on "the finer things" alot for my live performance but im stressing about it because I dont want to bomb it!

I HAVE NOTICED MYSELF DAY DREAMING IN MY CLASSES ABOUT MY SONG, I FIND MYSELF THINKING "ID RATHER BE WORKING ON MY MUSIC, OR DANCING".
FUNNY STORY

Today I had a 1 hour break and so I went to the duck pond to listen to the recording I made with Paul yesterday. I sat on the bench and closed my eyes and I got so into it that I was singing along with it and kind of moving around still sitting on the bench -totally forgot I was in public. About awhile had passed, a bird flew really close to my head and I snapped out of the intense zone I was in. I openned my eyes and realized that I had forgotten where I was, and about 15 min had gone by. Everyone around was looking at me like I was crazy....it was soo funny, I was just totally in my own little musical.. . . . . . I AM LOSING IT!

the one thing i have had to miss since school started is hot yoga...I miss my yoga butt!!! .... I will get back to it soon tho!

I did have a wonderful dance practice tonight

DANCE CLASS # 6

DATE/TIME: JAN 20TH 6:00-8:00PM

TYPE OF CLASS: Jazz, partnering, choreography

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: advanced

COMPANY: Dance Expose'

INSTRUCTOR: Edye Allen

MOST ENJOY: I loved learning the new choreography we learned tonight.

CHALLENGING: I have had to miss a few dance classes for Oklahoma and so I was a little rusty.

OBSERVATIONS: I have lost some weight on the challenge and I have noticed that it is much easier for my partners to lift me.

ME AND TIM

STAY TUNED!!!

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

DAY # 19

WOW!!! I CANT BELIEVE ITS ALREADY DAY # 19, THIS PAST 18 DAYS HAS GONE BY SO FAST!!!

MY SCHEDULE HAS GOTTEN SO CRAZY NOW THAT SCHOOL HAS STARTED SO I HAD TO GET MY 1ST ROUND OF VOCAL WORK IN @ 5AM THIS MORNING!

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: I worked on waking up my nasil area/sound ( sounds strange but I think most of you know what im talking about). I worked on low scales. I did breathing exercises. I did sirens. I also did a fast scale combo that I do with Sandra Neel.
MINUTES: 15

REPERTOIRE: "The Finer things" from Jane Eyre the musical and "I say a little prayer for you" from Promises Promises.
MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: I was able to get the tough scale combos that are in "The finer things". I have also been able to get the nasily-ish sound I want for "I say a little prayer for you". I was able to sing out without straining my vocal chords.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I am having some pitch problems on "The finer things". There are certian parts that I still dont quite have.

NOTES: I am thinking I might want "The finer things" to be my new song learned for the challenge. I have been practicing it all day, listening to my recorder all day in between classes to try to perfect it. I may be crazy choosing this song because it is very complicated, but I love it, its a great character piece.

AFTER SCHOOL, I GOT A QUICK LUNCH IN
HEALTHY MEAL # 23

BEEF STIR-FRY WITH CARROTS, JASMINE RICE, BROCC., AND CURRY COCONUT SAUCE!
FROM: I went to my dads and raided his kitchen (mmm leftovers).
RATING: VERY HEALTHY

THEN I WENT OFF TO MY SECOND LESSON WITH THE AMAZING PAUL ROTH!!

PRIVATE COACHING SESSION # 2
DATE/TIME: Jan 19th 2:00pm

INSTRUCTOR: PAUL ROTH ( he's the Bomb.com)

MINUTES: 40

REPERTOIRE: "The Finer things" and "Forget you".

POINTS COVERED: We worked mostly on "The Finer things". We worked on the timing and smoothness. As I said before, there are some very hard scales in the song so we worked on perfecting those. He also recorded played it without me singing so I could practice with it. We worked a little on "forget you" but we discovered that the key was way to high so I took out my lower version and that was too low. Paul figured out what key was right for me and we kinda faked it.

NOTES: I have noticed that it is a little harder to sing my part without him playing it, but the music is so beautiful, I just have to get my own part down and try to match up to it.

DAY # 18

TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY, I STARTED SCHOOL TODAY SO I GOT AN EARLY START AND DID MY VOCAL WORK BEFORE I LEFT FOR SCHOOL.

DAILY PRACTICE LOG

TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: I worked on holding low notes, with a straight tone, for 24 beats to see if i could use good breath support in my chest voice. Then, I worked mid voice. I did scales and sirens and the yogi bear noises. I also did tounge twisters like many mumbling mice and red leather yellow...
MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: "Forget you" Glee version, "Basketball" and " I say a little prayer for you" from Promises Promises.

SUCCESS: I havent worked on "forget you" in awhile and i feel like I have been able to get a more soulful sound reecently.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I need to work on relly reading the timing of the music. I keep trying to rush "Basketball" when I sing it. The timing is a little tough.

NOTES: "Forget you" is a song I would like to do infront of people soon. I think I will take that to Paul to work on tomorrow.

THEN I WENT TO SCHOOL AND FOR LUNCH, I HAD SOME YUMMY SALAD BY THE DUCK POND....SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!

HEALTHY MEAL # 22

THEN I HEADED OVER TO ROADRUNNER FOOD BANK FOR SOME GOOD OLD COMMUNTIY SERVICE

GOOD DEED # 4
I had signed up to go to roadrunner foodbank a few days ago and My scheduled time was today from 8-10am. Roadrunner provides food to families all over New Mexico, it is really a great thing! My fantastic mother went with me and when we got there we found cierra. I laughed a little because when the woman in the white coat was leading us around the warehouse, I felt like I was in Willy Wonka lol. We started out in the warehouse separating bread and patries. We seperated good and stale pastries and we had to throw all of the bread away because it was too old. I found this to be not only rewarding, but supprisingly fun!! Then the 3 of us were whisked away upstairs to separate spoons and forks. That part was actually kind of hard because we had to figure out how to get 500 of each in each small paper bag, but we did it. This was a great and fun experience and Roadrunner makes it really EASY for anybody to volunteer, its basically all set up for you. I think everyone should do this at least once, I plan to go again soon!!!

OK I LOOK STUPID IN THIS PIC BUT THATS NOT THE POINT! IT WAS A GOOD THING!!

INSTRUCTOR: Sandra Neel
MINUTES: 60
REPERTOIRE: "The finer things" "Jane Eyre" and " strange Music" "Song of Norway"

POINTS COVERED: We worked alot on timing today. The timing on "The finer things" is really super complex and really hard to get so we spent alot of time on that. We also worked on raising my arch to create a warmer, fuller sound.

NOTES: I really love "The finer things" I may want that to be my new song learned.

ME AND SANDY

THEN I GOT IN SOME PRACTICE

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:

TECNICAL CONCEPTS: Breathing - I really tried to hold the hissing sound longer than I have before. I worked on scales at the bottom of my range to see if I could bring some clarity to the sound. Low Sirens, holdong the last note for a long time.
MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: "Good morning Baltimore" from and " I can hear the bells" from "hairspray".
MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: I feel like Good morning baltimore is a song I can really belt on. I can use the nasily techniques Kurt taught me. I used good support.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I have been working on breath alot lately because while I do have better support, I am also breathing in the wrong places, and not breathing deep enough when I do.

NOTES: I just got "Hairspray" today and Im already loving it!! I cant wait to work on it some more.

TO END THE NIGHT I HAD DINNER

BROCCOLI BEEF
FROM: PANDA EXPRESS
RATING: HEALTHY AND DELISH!!!

GREAT DAY AND TOMORROW SCHOOL STARTS!!!! ILL KEEP YOU POSTED ON HOW I BALANCE THE CHAOS!!!

Sunday, January 16, 2011

DAY # 16

TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY, I REALLY ENJOYED MEETING WITH KURT AND EVERYONE TO TALK ABOUT THE CHALLENGE AND NEW YORK. IT WAS VERY EYE-OPENNING!

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:
TECNICAL CONCEPTS: I worked alot on my chest voice, I began by humming at the lowest my voice could physically go, then taking it to and open o. I practiced low scales because my chest voice is where I need the most work. I worked on the yogi bear sound.
MINUTES: 15

REPERTOIRE: "My heart will go on" from Titanic, "forget you", glee version, and "what ya want from me" Adam Lambert.
MINUTES: 45

SUCCESS: I noticed my throat seemed really open and relaxed today, it didnt hurt as much to try to belt it and sing low.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I need to work on incorporating more style into some of these songs, especially the adam lambert song, it needs a more edgy sound.

NOTES: I have decided, after struggling throug harmony work in oklahoma, that I need to learn to sight read better. I think Paul Roth would be the perfect person to go to for that.

HEALTHY MEAL # 18

GRILLED CHICKEN STUFFED WITH GREEN CHILE AND CHEESE.

I CANT WAIT TO CONTINUE AND STEP IT UP WITH THE REST OF THE CHALLENGE.

MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: " I say a little prayer" is coming together. I am starting to feel comfortable singing it in my chest voice. "Basketball" sounds and feels good in my voice.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I feel like everytime I try to belt, im straining my voice. My technique still needs work.

NOTES: Even though the song "basketball" is meant to be sung by a man, I really like it and its perfect for my range, i think ill add it to my repertoire anyway.

OK 15 DAYS DOWN, 15 TO GO!!

Todays post is going to be a short one but it was another wonderful full voice day.

I started out the day with some practice

DAILY PRACTICE LOG:
TECHNICAL CONCEPTS: lip trills, sirens, straight tone scales.
MINUTES: 20

REPERTOIRE: "many a new day" and "Oklahoma" from "Oklahoma".
MINUTES: 40

SUCCESS: I understand my parts a little better than I did.

AREAS TO IMPROVE: I was working on my part of the harmonys in these songs from our MTS rehersals. I practiced these parts from the recordings I made at rehersal yesterday because I really couldnt hear my 2nd soprano part. The whole thing was a major struggle still today but it did get a little better.

NOTES: Doing the harmonys is really beneficial for me because I havent done alot of that before and it is really challenging for me.

THEN I MADE MY WAY OVER TO DEL NORTE HIGH SCHOOL FOR MY 3RD GOOD DEED

GOOD DEED # 3

I was really trying to think, as I did yesterday, about what it meant to really give back and help the community so I decided to give back to a part of the theatre community that really changed my life. I was always a dancer, I was pretty much born into it, but I was never interested in theatre. I decided to go to Del Norte Highschool and on a whim I signed up for drama. From the first drama class my freshman year I knew my life would be changed forever. Mr. Hagmaeir, The drama teacher/director was and still is one of my most important mentors. I had the most amazing experiences and was really able to develop in theatre at del norte, and I know that its a place that gives that same chance to so many kids. Del Norte has been under serious construction for a year now, and wont be back to normal for a while. The construction has had a major impact on the theatre, it has seriously affected their ticket sales because the parking lot is totally torn out, and it has left the already struggling theatre in shambles!!! I wanted to volunteer my time to help the Del Norte theatre. Today I went there and volunteered 3 hours of my time to helping clean up and organize the theatre so they can put on their next play without such a chaotic environment. I cleaned up the theatre and spent alot of time organizing the library of plays and putting them into categories so that the drama students could have the same study opportunities I had. While my contribution was only a small part of what this theatre needs to get back on its feet, at least is was a start and the students and Mr. Hagmaier really appreciated it.

HERE IS ME AND MR. HAGMAIER

AFTER MY LUNCH I WENT TO WESTGATE COMMUNITY CENTER

CHARITABLE DEED #2- DANCE CLASS FOR KIDS

I know that Kurtis said we should try to use our artistic abilities to inspire those in our community and give back. I decided, since I dance, that I would give a free dance class to the children of Westgate community center.I chose this community center because these kids are kids that have never been exposed to dance and dont have a way to be exposed to dance. I am luky that mom has a dance company, I have always been able to be involved in it and dance has truly shaped my life. I feel bad that so many kids, especially less fortunate kids, are not able to have the same experiences that I have had so I wanted to share that with them for free and it was wonderful. I went to the center and started at 4:00pm. When the kids first came in, they seemed nervous so I started out with some exercises and jumoing around to break the ice. They really started to enjoy it and they really got into it, even the boys who didnt want to do it at first. I then did some accross the floor with them, turns, kicks, etc..., then, I taught them a fun jazz routine. I was suprised at how quickley they picked everything up and how much they enjoyed it. It absolutly warmed my heart when the kids came up to me after and hugged me and asked , "when are you coming back ? ". This experience was so amazing to me, I will definatly continue doing this and I told the kids I would be back soon and I will keep that promise!!!

STRAIGHT FROM MY SESSION WITH PAUL, I WENT OVER TO THE ABQ GRAND SENIOR LIVING CENTER

CHARITABLE ACT #1

Today me and 5 other of my friends competing in the challenge went to the ABQ Grand senior living center to sing for some of the seniors. I was so nervous when I got there because there were alot of people but It was so much fun. Each of us got up and sang and introduced ourselves with the wonerful accompaniment of Zack(he was great). I sang "Heather on the hill" form Brigadoon. I had so much fun watching the seniors because they seemed a little skeptical at first but I saw their eyes light up when peole started singing and the heard some music they recognized. It meant so much to me to see that we probably made their day. It made me so good to see them light up like that. I really loved it! It is something I really want to do on a regular basis! It was also great practice in singing in front of people. I was so proud of all of us challengers, and a big thanks to Renee for putting it together!!
